M4H P52 “My Paradise” Winner and Eye Candy

We are now almost at the 8 week Mark! You have almost 8 week’s of beautiful images to put in your albums at the end of the year. Just imagine how amazing they are all going to look printed! Are you seeing personal growth yet? That is one thing I love about taking at least one photo a week. We fight the mundane. We think more and more outside the box. We forge ahead and photograph and capture things we may not have even truly seen before. It makes our art stronger and us stronger as artists!

Last week the theme was “My Paradise.” I am excited to see where you all went with this. I know some of us have been pounded with snow while others live near sunny beaches. It is one of my favorite parts of going through our flickr gallery. All the geography is amazing. All the personalities and minds are beautiful. It is fun to be able to log on and see so much imagination in one place.

As a refresher, every Monday I browse the Flickr Group, the Facebook Group and the Fan Page for image shares to feature here from our project 52’s past weekly theme. I generally don’t limit the amount of images I choose as it is close to impossible to narrow it down sometimes.

Sometimes I wish I could turn off her insecurities for her. This is the age where they swirl around and seemingly consume and try to smother all that is good, telling little white lies and feeding the subconscious with unwarranted fears. They are background noise. I will remind her every second I can break through that she is kind, and worthy and lovely. She is special. We will break the preteen cycle together.

When I first saw the theme for the week was Paradise, I immediately in my head went to Paradise Island, Bahamas. But, since getting there and taking a picture wasn’t on the agenda for this week, I drove about 10 minutes up into the foothills near my home and took this picture of our neighboring town, Paradise, CA. Not quite the paradise I initially envisioned.

This was a tough one, I’m not going to lie. We have had minus 24 degrees this week! Yikes. However, I drug my family up to our favorite summertime watering hole, and decided to love it just the same. Even covered in snow and ice! THEN I discovered these little pockets in the snow and couldn’t help but LOVE the heart frame! So this is a peek into our summertime paradise, where we spend every non working hour swimming and boating and camping and loving this place we call home.

I love the beach. I spent my childhood playing at the beach. I’ve never lived more than 5 miles from the beach. I like nothing better than to spend a relaxing day with my kids playing at the beach (an empty beach, on a Friday morning). This is my paradise.

    My Paradise (6/52)

    Caption:
    My Paradise (6/52)

For the past four weeks I have been engulfed in the “newborn fog.” So, after 2 years of faithful weekly participation in this project, I decided to take a break, a breath, to focus on the transition, healing, and celebration that new life brings to our family. I have missed it, though – the challenge, creativity, and camaraderie.

Over recent days, God has sent some clear messages that are breaking through the clouds. After reading my Project 52 photo book compilation from last year, my mother remarked, “Oh, Liz, I hope you are doing that again. You have such a gift.” Then my husband observed, “Reading that book brought tears to my eyes. For you, photography is more than a hobby, it’s a passion.”

And so I realized that no matter if I’m functioning on less-than-optimal sleep or stained with spit up, I still need to pick up my camera. Even if it’s simply 5 minutes. For my “paradise” is being in God’s will. It’s following even when I can’t see for the hazy obstructions of the immediate – the diaper changes, cries for nursing, potty accidents, game-playing requests, nourishment demands, transportation fulfillment… It’s finding my mission here. Now. It’s using my gifts to serve my family (and the world), to bless others, to bring God glory and to nourish my soul.

And this photo captured what looks to me like a dove in ice form. Reminding me that from heaven was sent a dove, a messenger of hope, of peace which will one day be my “paradise” eternal.

(Posting a couple photos of the newest addition in my Flickr stream for those who would like to “meet” him. 🙂

I was going to venture outdoors for this week to find a slice of paradise to photograph. But then these babies arrived today and I realised I had my own little bit of paradise on the wall in the lounge room. Featuring photos taken for this very Project over the past couple of years of course. Feels so good to finally have some of my work on the wall!!!

    Title: Polar Paradise

Last week we learned that we are relocating from Chicago to Houston. We will miss many, many things about Chicago (especially family and friends) we will NOT miss the polar vortex that has gripped many parts of the country this winter. My kids on the other hand, love playing in the snow, sledding, and even enjoying a cold snowy treat. So in our last few weeks of a Midwest, we are trying to see things through our kids’ eyes to enjoy a little polar paradise.

Ever since I was a little girl, I have wanted to be a mom. Some people may not think it’s the most glamorous life (and they would be right) or that what I do isn’t as worthwhile as having a job outside the home, but there is nothing else I would rather be doing. There are days I complain, and my kids drive me nuts, and I envy our friends who have the freedom to do whatever they want becasue they don’t have kids. But this is my paradise. These two crazy, loud, sensitive, and incredibly sweet little boys, and this adorable, happy, cuddly, amazing little girl are my dream come true.

Our record room is a little slice of paradise for of all us, but the twins especially love it. They can spend hours in there, dancing the day away. We didn’t use our formal dining room, so my husband and I decided to convert it to a record room where we could listen to great albums with our children. The twins love them some Black Keys 🙂

Week 6/52 – Paradise – I know the concept is to take a picture during the week of the theme, but as it is -20 degrees C and bitterly cold. Paradise seems a bit far away. For the past few years we had been going to Kauai to participate in the Hawaii Dinosaur Volleyball tournament. We are not going this year and I am going to miss it. Last year I took a helicopter flight over the island. The helicopter had no doors so I could take photos. It was amazing, warm and gorgeous. This is Paradise

Yesterday we were filming a scene of our (as it would best be called in English) graduation video. And this scene will surely be the best one, because it is truly epic.
For me and my classmate(in the picture with tripod), who eventually is my filming partner, this film will be a tough challenge, because we are really taking this serious while we are not at all used to fictional stuff. Although as far as we are through the production, we are doing well.
I love filming as much as I like photography, so every time the shooting location becomes paradise for me, especially if WE ARE DRIVING CAR ON LAKE AND FILMING FROM TRUNK WHILE MOVING.

Week 6: Paradise. I was compelled to make this fine art piece after an 11 year old boy that I was meant to photograph one more time, passed before I could. He came to me in a dream last night. He was absolutely beautiful. He told me to still photograph his family, that he would still be in the photos. I woke up with chills. I took this photo of the lone seagull and went artistic with it this week. May he rest in peace.

The happiest times of my life have been both of my children’s first year. It is such an amazing feeling to meet and care for this little person that you made, that you have felt move inside of you for months. I have never minded a single night feeding or all those times that they just needed to be held by me. I am sad to think that this may be the last time that I get to experience all of those “baby’s first” from my own children. It makes me appreciate all of these small moments more, as I enjoy my little bit of paradise for the moment.

    PARADISE {6/52}

This week I traveled to Siem Reap, Cambodia and was honored to do a home-stay with a local family. I was able to experience firsthand how they work, live and eat and sleep. They only have electricity at night when they kick on the generator. Their kitchen and shower is outside in the mud. They sleep on bamboo mats. Children go to school during the day and the family works on the farm or very near to their village. On the morning of departure, we handed out notebooks and pencils to all the kids of the family and village. They were so excited. While they probably felt they were in “Paradise” receiving these gifts, my “Paradise” was watching the expressions on their faces filled with excitement and joy!
