Inspired, A Very Special Project | Anne Scherrer Photography

Yay for Thursday’s edition of the Inspired Project! I can honestly say I look forward to these just as much as everyone else seems to.  I pour through everything as I am posting but try not to read so I can read the articles after they are all put together.  It is so much fun to get to know these awesome photographers on such a personal level and I am always amazed at how generous they are with their time and answers.  I can seriously say that it has helped me tremendously with the funk I have been in.  After these posts I am always ready to get out with my camera and take some photos!  I can honestly say after three months of this project I have never been so excited for my photography season to start!

This edition of Inspired I have the super talented Anne Scherrer.  Anne really finds a way to marry whimsy and reality in such a beautiful artistic way.  Her images scream childhood to me.  Her subjects natural demeanor, the way in which she  uses light and even the pure essence and beauty embodied in her photographic style is so unique and special.  From the first time I had the pleasure of going through her portfolio I knew she would be a photographer I could learn from.  I have been told many times you could be as technically proficient as you wanted to be but to be something special in this industry you had to have an “eye”. I have really come to see that its not only a good “eye” you need but the willingness to discover it. The courage to be different and the ability to find your voice reigns over it all.  Without further ado I present the ever so talented Anne Scherrer.

You can find Anne’s website HERE. You can also say “Hi” to Anne on Facebook right HERE.

    Well Hello Sweet Anne!!

Let’s get right into the Feature!

Lets get to know you! How would you describe yourself in three sentences?

I’m Frenchie. I’m a wife and a mother of a busy 3 years old living in the States. Before becoming a photographer I worked in the movie industry for 10 years in Paris – I’m an images ‘lover !

What sparked your passion for Photography?

I have loved photography since my childhood (my grandfather was a great village photographer!), but for some reason it took me a long time to actually try myself.  It all started when I was working on a commercial movie whose Director happened to be a photographer. I went with him to scout the place. We needed pictures to work afterward on the shooting board. I remember looking at him taking these pictures and thinking, why is he shooting this or that. I just didn’t get the point. Then when I saw the pictures I was blown away. I was there looking at the exactly same thing but, obviously we were not seeing the same thing. Then I realized, there is another way to see and to show. I decided to work on that. It took me almost 10 years before holding a camera, but when it happens I was ready!

    Whats in your camera bag?

    5DMark II, 5D classic, 24-70 2.8 – 50mm1.4 – Lensbaby Muse

What Camera/Equipment did you start out with?

I had a Minolta Dynax 5  until I went digital directly with the 5D.

If you could only use one lens an entire session which one would you choose and why?

For a children/ family session, I’d go with my 24-70mm because it is so versatile. But for anything else, my 50mm without a doubt, I love its sharpness and its creaminess.

What advice would go give to someone just beginning in photography and hoping to have a business of their own?

Practice practice practice… Once you feel very comfortable with the technical and artistic side well it may be time to think about business

What was your first official Photographer crush if you had one?

Henri Cartier Bresson. His work is incredible !

I know it’s not original especially for a French individual! But how can you resist somebody who says

“To take photographs means to recognize – simultaneously and within a fraction of a second – both the fact itself and the rigorous organization of visually perceived forms that give it meaning. It is putting one’s head, one’s eye and one’s heart on the same axis.”…

What kind of photos do you like to take for just yourself when not working with clients?

Trying some crazy ideas that cross my mind… I would take more pictures of my son if only he let me do so!

If you could photograph absolutely anyone who would it be dead or alive?

I would have love taking pictures of the dancer Nijinsky … you know the crazy Petrushka!

Describe your style in 3 words.

    Clean, emotive, poetic

Most embarrassing moment on a session would be?

When I cannot make myself understood with my broken English (I’m trying hard now!).

Any challenges you have had to overcome to be where you are today?

I guess I really had to build my self-confidence…

Favorite time of day to shoot is?

Anytime indoor, 2/3 hours before sunset outdoor

If you had to stop taking photos right now, what would you do instead?

I could probably go back to my old job.

Have you attended college or had any formal education in Photography?

    Nope.

What do you do to get your clients to relax with you?

I like telling my clients what a good job they are doing and encouraging them.  I want this to be a great experience for everyone and encouraging words make all the difference. With kids, I always bring funny props or beautiful toys that can attract their attention and possibly stay on the pictures.

What are your photography related goals for 2012?

Finding the right balance between family and work and improving the consistency of my work on the artistic and business sides.

How do you push yourself to keep growing and learning? Any Big Aha! Moments?

I’m always eager to read about photography. I also spend a lot of time looking at pictures and analyze them.

Big aha moment, clearly, when I discovered Clickinmoms. I learned so much through this forum and I really recommend it.

    Biggest Photography related insecurity?

I already mentioned language, ok photography-related, I still have a lot to learn with studio lighting

    Digital or Prints? Both

How long did it take you to develop your processing style. Its so rich and unique. I am always in awe of your beautiful photos!

Thank you Sarah ! Well my processing style is pretty simple. Most of the work is done during the shoot. Then I do a clean edit + a dreamy & vintage touch.
