I looked at the messy kitchen table on this rainy day & realized this is how my life is best summed up at the moment: my daughter’s rice cake & cereal puffs from breakfast mixed in with her library books, my cameras, film, record player (currently want to record our collection of vinyl to digital so I won’t forget what vinyl sounds like when it’s gone someday …if I ever find the time), & jute twine & seeds for the garden (which is really my husband’s area of expertise). The aloe vera plant is the only “house plant” I haven’t killed.

I thought this was such a hard theme. So many things encompass “my life”, I wasn’t sure how to choose or photograph what I wanted to get across. Then the other night when my husband was cooking on the grill, it hit me. It all starts and ends here..with him. We were best friends in high school, have been married for almost 25 years, we have 3 sons and a beautiful grandson. We have had and continue to have a beautiful life together. Sometimes it’s crazy and a little out of focus…but that’s ok, I like it that way 🙂

6:10 a.m. Everyone’s up and getting ready for work/school. My brother-in-law’s bird is visiting for the month. The dining room table is cluttered with textbooks in preparation for 8th and 11th grade finals this week. This fleeting, sweet moment in this busy life of mine was captured because of my 17 year habit of leaving my camera on the kitchen counter – ready to document my life at a moment’s notice.

So many shots could depict ‘my life’; it could involve a beautiful landscape…with a sunset of course, a cheeky smile from one of my gorgeous kids, a portrait of my hubby of 20+ years, or even a classroom full of the students I teach. But essentially…what defines ‘my life’? My family. Coming together and sharing a meal. This is us, Sunday morning breakfast, the first day of Winter in Australia, (sorry had to kick my pyjama pants off, as it was too hot!). “my life” This is a picture of my parents who have raised 11 children, have 42 grandkids (with more on the way) and 9 great grandkids (also more on the way). They have lived in this house for 45 years. They have been married for over 55 years and last week we found out my mom has stage 4 colon cancer and only 6-9 months to live. She wasn’t feeling very well but somehow had enough strength to enjoy the beautiful evening outside (in her robe and jammiess–don’t tell her I posted this picture she won’t be happy with me ha ha). My mother is the best woman I know. Last week I got to visit her in Virginia and serve her and take care of her. Many days were spent rubbing her feet with essential oils to help sooth her discomfort. I prepared her meals, took her to appointments and helped her when she was not able to keep her food down. I love her dearly and I love my parents so much. They are the reason I have such an incredible life. I chose this picture because they are the reason I am alive today and this home is where I grew up and have the best memories and had the best childhood anyone could dream of. Being raised by 2 parents who love each other dearly and love their children equally and gave everything they had to raising us is the best blessing anyone could have. MY LIFE is amazing.

My first career path was in creative writing, and I love to read about others’ lives, write about my own, and teach my children the love of books…the magic, the adventure, the SMELL of the pages!! Last summer we were so excited to unexpectedly be expecting our first baby! We have been married for almost 7 years and in that time we have had 3 first trimester miscarriages–which led us down the road of adoption. 3 years ago we adopted our beautiful daughter and so we were even more excited to be giving her a sibling. However at 16 weeks, that nearly came to a screeching halt, as my membranes ruptured and I spent a week in the hospital praying my fluids would build back up. They slowly did to a little over 1 centimeter and I was finally discharged, but put on strict bed rest. Week after week, appointment after appointment, we slowly were making it, but then life threw another curve ball as I went into labor at 24 weeks. After 5 days of heavy meds, my body just couldn’t hold on and our baby was delivered via emergency c-section. It was a boy, but before we got settled in to NICU life, our baby passed away 7 hours after birth.

So…6 months later, we are desperately trying and praying for another baby. This is my life.

I litterly shot this from my hip as I was saying goodbye at their house last night. So many things wrong with the photo but I love it anyways.
