As I walked down to our calving barn to check on a hurt calf I couldn’t help but ponder the vastness of the heavens. The wide-open spaces I am blessed to live under never cease to humble me.

I love how kids just get in and do the job. I see a soccer field as a vast open space that you get very puffed running around trying to kick a ball. One that very rarely seems to actually go into the net. They see it as vast open space full of fun with their mates.

This is just a short drive from where I live in Northern California. Not what most people think of when they think of California, but this is home and I feel so lucky to live in such a beautiful place.

week 13 | vast : my great-grandmother’s bible. I inherited this family relic after my great aunt’s passing last week. God’s word, His very nature is vast… beyond my comprehension. But this Bible in particular is vast with my family history… the aged leather… I rub my hands over it picturing my great-grandmother’s hands and how they must have touched its pages a thousand times. My great-great-grandfather’s handwritting in the front cover presenting it to my great-grandmother on her birthday. My great-grandmother’s writting and highlighting throughout… its priceless. I want my Bible to be so well used it looks like this one day.

Vast: when I read that the theme this week was vast, I knew what I wanted to capture. I wanted an image that shows how big the world is and how small our children are in comparison. And that even though they are small, they embrace this life.
But I had no idea about the how or where or the whys. As the end of the week raced towards me, I put it in the too hard basket and started thinking of alternatives. Then yesterday this happened…and I had goosebumps.

“‘I’m bored’ is a useless thing to say. You live in a great, big, vast world that you’ve seen none percent of. And even the inside of your own mind is endless. It goes on forever inwardly. Do you understand? Being the fact that you’re alive is amazing, you don’t get to be bored.” Louis CK

Week 13 / P52 – Vast – The huge lava fields on the Big Island of Hawaii are awe inspiring. This photo was taken on the Saddle road between Mona Kea and Mona Loa… two massive mountains that form the majority of the Big Island. These are older lava flows (~150 years ago) but still have very little growing on them. — at The Big Island, Hawaii.
