I wanted to be a little ironic with this theme, and when we went to KMart this morning, it was the perfect opportunity. These are gorgeous tulips, and I love the juxtaposition of the natural tulips and the artificial discount store.

Natural Beauty – (12/52)
In my early 20s my self-image deteriorated to the point of obsession and pathology. I was controlling, depressed, isolated, and wasting away… I pray over my sweet daughter that she will always grasp the depth of her beauty: that in God’s eyes she is simply perfect, she is wonderfully made, and she has an amazing plan in this world. May she ever look in the mirror and see love, joy, goodness, truth and her place as a daughter of the King.
As Jonny Diaz sings, “there could never be a more beautiful you
don’t buy the lies disguises and hoops they make you jump through
you are made to fill a purpose that only you could do
so there could never be a more beautiful you.”

She’s cute, she’s pretty………. but her true beauty comes from inside her big, kind heart. That’s what matters. That’s what makes me so very proud.

12/52 – Natural Beauty
If I were to write a list of words to describe myself, beauty most definately wouldn’t make it on the list. But this week I chose a self portrait as I think my natural beauty is more about the person I am, then how I look. It’s not exactly perfect – a self portrait is a little tricky! But I guess that’s the thing about natural beauty, it embraces the imperfections!

This week’s theme gave me a chance to use my macro lens for something other than product photography. We don’t have a lot blooming in Maryland yet, but it’s coming.

This is my gorgeous, amazing, extremely hardworking mother. I chose her for this week’s theme because, though she usually wears makeup, I firmly believe she’s beautiful without it. She is a natural beauty. I love you, mom!

I took this self portrait to portray the fact that as women, it it easy for us to see the beauty in others, but often extremely difficult to see it in ourselves. When I was in my 20’s, I made a CD for my friends called “Girl Power”, with inspiring songs by powerful women. One friend told me recently that her 8 year old daughter is now listening to it. I love that it is inspiring the next generation. Here are lyrics from one of the songs on the CD…
“When I look in the mirror and the only one there is me. Every freckle on my face is where it’s supposed to be. I know my creator didn’t make no mistakes on me. My feet, my thighs, my lips, my eyes, I’m loving what I see”.

This was a different approach for me this week, both technically and emotionally. It is a tribute to my mom, who I lost over 5 months ago. I could go and visit her, no make-up, messy hair, and she would fawn over me. “Oh look at you! You look so pretty! Like you just stepped out of a magazine!” she’d say. I’d roll my eyes every time. Seriously, Ma? I’m in ratty yoga pants and my hair is a mess! It would actually get on my nerves! But MY GOSH how I miss that now. Because sadly, it’s taken not having it to realize what it was, and I’m embarrassed as a mother myself that I didn’t understand it before. It’s a mother’s love. A mother will always see the beauty in her children. I really believe a mother’s love is unmatched. It’s a different kind of love that can’t be replicated or replaced. And I miss it so much, on so many levels. This is for you, Mom ♥

Natural Beauty
I have fallen behind with my trip to Vegas to attend WPPI. But the OCD in me wouldn’t let it die, so I am officially all caught up for the past 4 weeks. If you’d like to check out those pictures, please do so. In the mean time, here is a picture from Valley of Fire. This natural beauty certainly didn’t disappoint.

I went back and forth about what type of photo I would do for this week, (after all, I have 4 kiddos who I think are ALL beautiful 😉 ). Well, the baby needed a quick cleaning, (which always results in a sink bath) and then I saw it. The amazing natural light streaming in through the window, making his beautiful baby skin glow off the reflection of the water. I knew right there, that it doesn’t get much more beautiful than these fleeting everyday moments.

Sneaking in here at the last minute. I try to enter something somewhat unique every week and it’s not always easy. I ordered up a rainbow this week but it came while I was in a shopping center parking lot with buildings all around. I was able to take only one photo before it faded away so this is it.

I love how the evening light filters in and lights up my studio. Seeing my daughter sit in the middle of the light made me leap for my camera! I’m used to shooting in bright light and very few shadows. I loved working with the dark and light contrasts. I look forward to playing around more with this moody, natural light! 🙂

I took this of Grace yesterday. I didn’t ask her to pose … she just did and she seemed to gaze right into my soul. Looking at it now … and I am seriously biased but … she is BEAUTIFUL. I feel weak.

This wasn’t what I originally planned to do for this week’s theme, but when I started thinking more about natural beauty, I started thinking about how I want my kids to know that their beauty comes from the inside. And then I remembered the verse below which serves as a good reminder for myself as well. True beauty most definitely comes deep from within your heart and soul.
I Peter 3:3-4 “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.”
