  1. Inspired, A Very Special Project | Justine Knight Photography

Yay jumping right into this week’s edition of the Inspired Project! Justine is an AMAZING photo journalistic photographer. I am so excited to bring her to this project! Such a breath of fresh air! She has the most artistic point of view and I love that she shares that with the world!! Spending time with her portfolio has really made me want to pick up my camera and take to the streets with a fresh perspective!

You can find Justine’s Website HERE and her Facebook page HERE.

    Hi Justine!!

Lets get to know you! How would you describe yourself in three sentences?

I am an Australian living in New York with my husband and 2 daughters. I love to spend time with family and friends, shop, drink cocktails and run. I absolutely love to travel!!

What sparked your passion for Photography?

I had always enjoyed taking photographs but after taking an online course in fall 2011 that focused on taking better photos of your children; it became an obsession!

    Whats in your camera bag?

A Nikon D90 and Nikon F100 and a collection of prime lenses

What Camera/Equipment did you start out with?

A Nikon D40 and kit lens.

If you could only use one lens an entire session which one would you choose and why?

My 35mm prime lens. It is so versatile and gives me that wider angle that I love.

What advice would go give to someone just beginning in photography and hoping to have a business of their own?

    Practice, practice, practice.
Immerse yourself in a range of photographers, styles and techniques.
Listen to yourself; it’s the only way to create your own unique vision.
Finally find a group of photography friends — they are both a huge influence and support to me.

What was your first official Photographer crush if you had one?

Robert Doisneau – I had his print of ‘The Kiss by the Hôtel de Ville’ on my wall as a teenager.

If you could photograph absolutely anyone who would it be dead or alive?

I would love to go back in time and photograph John Lennon.

Describe your style in 3 words.

I am not even close to getting there yet but my aim is for distinctive, timeless and memorable images.

Any challenges you have had to overcome to be where you are today?

Sharing my work! I have been really terrible at this in the past and am starting to share more through my website, facebook and on the Daily Project on ClickinMoms (http://www.clickinmoms.com/cmprodaily/). It is still such a challenge for me!

Favorite time of day to shoot is?

Anytime that I can get out on my own and shoot!!

If you had to stop taking photos right now, what would you do instead?

I would most likely stay at home with the girls until they are both at school then head back to the world of Finance!

Have you attended college or had any formal education in Photography?

    No

What are your photography related goals for 2013?

Continue to build on all the skills I have learned in 2012.
I am really excited about starting a business with a focus on families and children. I am hoping to incorporate my love of the city into these sessions!

How do you push yourself to keep growing and learning? Any Big Aha! Moments?

I really love to keep myself challenged with different projects – learning to shoot film, shooting wide open etc. This year I am involved in a number of very different blog circles which are keeping me both challenged and inspired.
I also love immersing myself in the works of other photographers – both masters and modern day.

    Biggest Photography related insecurity?

Confidence. I need to develop more confidence in my work and where I want my photography to go.

    Digital or Prints?

I am starting to do more prints but honestly it is digital.

How do you set yourself apart from other local photographers?

I hope that by being true to my own vision, I will naturally set myself apart.

What do you think your next photography related investment will be?

    A camera body upgrade!!!

If you had to recommend ONE thing that a photographer needs in their camera bag what would that be?

A prime lens — moving on your feet really helps your mind to construct an image.

What would you say your biggest muse is?

I love photographing my girls but for me New York City is my biggest muse.

    Fun stuff:
    Favorite Color: Blue
    Favorite Season: Spring
Biggest Guilty Pleasure: Chocolate, champagne and cheese
Pet Peeve: Bad drivers that make me swear in front of my girls
Studio or On location: On Location
One thing no one knows about you is: There are too many days that I leave the house without brushing my hair (or maybe people do know this!)
    Pc or Mac: Mac

  2. A Beautiful Connecticut Wedding

This summer I really pushed myself. We did quite a bit of traveling and one of our trips was to head back to CT and shoot a beautiful wedding.  As most know I specialize mostly in Children and Families but love a good challenge so I thought I would push myself to see how I felt about the possibility of adding weddings to my roster. I learned one thing in particular. Weddings are NOT for the faint of heart. The work volume. The fast pace. It really was a completely consuming albeit amazing experience. Would I do it again? It depends on the opportunity. I do think to in order to photograph weddings you really need to gel with the bride and groom. You have to really be able to marry your vision with theirs.

This particular bride is actually my Baby cousin.  We grew up together and in fact she was a bridesmaid on my own special wedding day almost ten years ago. It was so surreal watching her get ready and then walk down the aisle. I was so emotionally invested in this wedding there were so many times I had to choke back tears. Never the less it was an incredible honor and I love these two so very much!! My husband even second shot for me making it a total family affair.

The images are pretty much in the order they were taken. There were MANY, many more but I just chose some of my favorites in the interest of load time. The one thing harder then shooting a wedding may be blogging a wedding lol!!
